David's Story
False names are used to protect the client's identity.
A schoolteacher abused David at a Private school on Sydney’s North Shore from the age of 7 years old. This would happen during school hours and after Rugby training.
This abuse included touching, fondling, groping and anal penetration.
David is the youngest of 5 boys.
Aside from David's eldest brother, Jacob, who was also abused by the same teacher, his three other brothers have successful careers, are in loving relationships, and have no history of violence.
David received a sentence of nine months, serving five months in custody due to violence. Two years later, David served three months on remand for a breach of an ADVO.
David lived in a housing commission in Sydney’s inner west. He had no savings and did not own property. He borrowed money from his mum to purchase his car.
Since 2015, David has not been employed for more than 2 years.
David’s most recent employer fired him on the basis that the violence at home was affecting his attendance.
The abuse David endured as a child has had a significant impact on his mental health. David had never committed to long-term counselling because he could not afford it.
When David felt depressed, he would turn to illicit drugs and alcohol to self-medicate.
This started at 16 with marijuana and led to Ice, which David described as giving him a numbing effect and increasing his self-confidence. David thought he was ‘hopeless’ for not being able to concentrate at work. David would have thoughts of self-blame, guilt, suicide, and a constant fear of anxiety. He took Ice to escape.
David developed a gambling addiction.
When David used Ice, he would not show up for work and be uncontactable for days.
David has been diagnosed with paranoia and Psychosis. Doctors say his drug use had caused it.
