Jacob's Story

False names are used to protect the client's identity.

Jacob’s schoolteacher sexually abused Jacob from grade 4 until grade 8.

Jacob struggled academically at school. As such, his parents accepted he needed extra tuition.

A schoolteacher from a prestigious private school on Sydney's North Shore approached the family about tutoring Jacob at home. They agreed.

Jacob was tutored in Math. This occurred in his home, the teachers' home, at school, and on one occasion, at Jacob's holiday home.

Jacob was sexually abused at each location.

The abuse would often occur around dinnertime when it was dark outside.

The pattern of abuse was similar each time. The teacher would close the blinds, lock the door, touch Jacobs's genitals and perform oral sex on him.

The teacher used emotional and grooming tactics to insinuate this abuse was normal. He would say the following:

1. "I am preparing you for manhood."

2. "This is how some Indian men are brought into adolescence."

3. "Can you feel the electricity between us?"

4. "We should close the door so we won't be interrupted."

5. "This is how you become a man."

6. "This is all part of growing up."

As a child, Jacob did not tell anyone about the abuse. Jacob thought this teacher loved him and was helping him to become a man.

The abuse had a significant impact on Jacob.

Jacobs's parents paid for Jacob and his brothers to attend private schools in hopes of a good education and a head start in their careers. The abuse meant Jacob's education was wasted.

Jacob could not concentrate and was consumed with thoughts about his sexuality and if he unknowingly invited his teacher to abuse him.

Jacob gave up on all subjects related to reading and writing. He considers himself illiterate today.

Jacob left school at the end of year 10.

Three of Jacobs brothers finished year 12, went to university, and have successful careers. None of them were sexually abused.

Jacobs's youngest brother, David, has faced significant difficulty. The same teacher abused him.

Jacob has suffered with trust and emotional intimacy and is hypersensitive to rejection.

This has led to drinking excessive amounts of alcohol to numb these feelings since the age of 14.

When Jacob drank alcohol, he became more aggressive, quicker to react, and became violent.

Jacob has spent one month in jail on remand because of violence.

Jacob has never committed to long-term counselling because he could not afford it.

Jacob still suffers from self-blame, guilt and shame.

Jacob has periods of sleep deprivation. He is consumed with "what if" and "why me".

Despite this, Jacob has become a successful business owner, claiming that he “was not going to be a victim.”

Our Approach

Jacob reported the abuse to the police in 1997.

In 1998, the teacher was charged with six counts of indecently assaulting Jacob.

In 2000, Jacob gave a further statement.

In 2000, the teacher was found guilty of three counts of indecently assaulting Jacob.

Disclosing the abuse in 1997 helped Jacob come to terms with what happened to him; however, it did not resolve many of the issues he still suffers from.

During this criminal case, Jacob was told that he could not bring a civil claim against the school as the claim was out of time. There was, however, a change to legislation in March 2016, obsoleting time limits, allowing Jacob to bring a claim.

Jacob did not get further legal advice until he spoke to Dormer Stanhope in 2021.

Jacob's case settled at mediation, where he received $575,000.
